Essential Ideas On Being A Digital Nomad Parent

Are you a parent who wants to travel, but you’re having second thoughts because you’re concerned… are you asking yourself, “Am I Doing The Right Thing?”

It’s normal to have this kind of inner feeling, to be able to ask yourself whether such an idea would be bad for your children, or to wonder what your family might think, what you would do about schooling, education and other “normal” parts of life.

You’re not the first to think this way. I remember the time that I found out that I was pregnant and I walked over to a place called “Sunset Cocktail,” which is on the banks of the Nile River in Luxor and ordered a drink at this small cocktail bar on the river and watched the sun go down by myself; by the way, I really needed a drink! (I was only a few weeks preggo), thinking at the time this was going to have to be the end of my travels… I wasn’t particularly happy about the fact that as a mum I would have to be more responsible, return to the UK and feed my way back into that system. I didn’t want to go back to somewhere where I would be miserable, but I pondered on what choices I had… During that evening many thoughts crossed my mind, and when I left the bar, I had totally made my mind up, that wherever I went, this baby was coming with me, and I wasn’t going to spend the next 16 years back in the UK!

Here are the thoughts that I formulated that night…

Thought #1 Isn’t This MY Life Still?

Whether you have 1 child or 10, you need to always remember that you have a life too, and your children aren’t going to be very happy if you aren’t. If I hated the lifestyle in the UK so much, why was I thinking that my children would be better off there?

Of course I would never put my child in any harm’s way and I would always make sure that he had somewhere to stay, and experienced those books, toys and games, nice clothes, celebrations of Christmas, birthdays, Oreo’s (as my kids are half American), Thomas the Tank Engine episodes on the TV, etc. The most important thing is of course the Love of a mother and you should remember that all of these important things can be sourced pretty much wherever you are. And to take advantage of this kind of opportunity quickly, seriously consider taking on someone looking into virtual assistant certification on their own, or even a team of virtual assistants, to help you get everything up-and-running fast!

I still have to live MY life, I just had another addition to take care of.

2. Why Should I Be Better off Staying in One Place?

Look all around you and ask yourself what that place really has to offer you? In the western world we are sometimes blinded by retail, homes, cars, material possessions etc… if you take all that away – what are you left with in your current location? Your absolute basic needs can be met, no matter where you are located. And don’t forget, someone looking into virtual assistance can help you with all the details, at a great price, while they’re still in training to be a VA.

3. How Would Friends and Family View This?

For any of you who are currently not digital nomads, I would say leaving Family and Friends would be very hard… but the way technology is these days, nobody is ever too far away. Skype is a marvellous invention which allows you to have a great conversation with a loved one at any time, for free, as if they were right next to you!

The world is very small, you can get from one side to another in a few days, and leaving a country doesn’t mean that your family and friends leave your heart, which is what counts.

Ultimately, as harsh as it sounds, what your friends and family think does not really count. I am sure that if it’s what you really want, and you express this to them, they will be supportive of your decision.
